Each year, Father Nick Blaha leads a group of 8 hikers into the remote desert wilderness of Big Bend National Park, pictured at right.
Big Bend is three parks in one, containing mountainous, desert, and river terrain. Our itinerary will include all three. It is home to nearly 190 species of birds, a great variety of wildlife and desert flora, natural hot springs on the Rio Grande, and some of the most spectacular views in the southwest. It is also the national park with the least light pollution in the lower 48 states, allowing for an unparalleled view of the night sky.
The retreat dimension will include conferences and readings on the Purgatorio of Dante, daily Mass (including Mass at 7,800 feet), silent meditation, and plenty of opportunities for mortification and teamwork!
We will be backpacking for the majority of the trip, but our 14-hour drive home will involve an overnight stop in Dallas for a hot shower and a good meal.
Hikers are required to train beforehand, including day hikes with full gear. The retreat costs $375, all-inclusive, including transportation. Two practice hikes will deduct $75 from the total cost.
Download an application and submit it to the Didde Center office with your $50 deposit by February 13th, 2019.
